We traveled to Rothenburg ob der Tauber again today. We had come here in December for their Christmas market. But we didn't make it to the Night Watchman's tour in December because it was already a long day and the temperature kept dropping fast. So today we drove up and enjoyed the cool spring weather. The kids climbed the steep stairs onto the city wall.
We were able to walk around the city this time without the snow and slush. It was nice and enjoyable. We discovered the church of St. Jacob. I am not sure how we missed it last time, since it is the largest church in the city.
The boys are taking a break and having a snack. Then we started walking back through the town to the Marketplatz. It was a bit shocking the difference between the off season and the Christmas market. So much more enjoyable without all the people. The shops, bakeries, and museums were closed, so we just wandered the streets.
We finally parked ourselves on the stairs of the Market Square and waited until the tour started at 8pm. The kids are entertaining themselves and the adults by playing Red light-Green Light. It started out with only our kids. We would not allow them to play tag with the others. I could just see one of the kids tripping on the slanted, uneven cobblestones. So we encouraged them to play Red Light- Green Light. Then the other kids joined in making it really fun. Below is a photo finish, the blurry ones are definitely OUT.
The Night Watchman's tour was entertaining. He started off by giving us the history of a night watchman and how it was one of the lowest occupations to have. Then, while still in character, he promoted his job as well as his DVD. He did give a few kids a dirty looks to keep them quiet, but it didn't bother me because it wasn't any of our kids.
It got dark quick. But the boys enjoyed watching the bats fly around at twilight. Cassidy on the other hand was up front, listening and laughing at the night watchman's jokes.
The Night Watchman gave us the history of the town as well as its inhabitants. He explained how the outer city was bombed during World War II and also how the city center was saved from being totally destroyed. The kids were well behaved for the tour which made all the difference in the world. We really enjoyed our time together today.
This is Zachary's rock collection. To keep himself entertained during the tour, he gathered rocks along our way. While we were stopped listening to the guide, he arranged his rocks and asked me to take a picture. I did. He wasn't allowed to bring the rocks home with us, so he found a nice home for them on the walk back to the car.

That tour looked interesting. I read about it when we were planning our trip. Would you recommend it?
Yes, I would recommended the tour. It was fun and interesting. We went there expecting only 10-15 people and I think there was more like 50 on the tour.
